The kids have been out of school for weeks now, summer is winding down and before we know it, the leaves will be falling. While the days are still (relatively) long, The Occasional Saler is going to take full advantage. Yes, for the month of August, there will be posts to the blog every Tuesday and Thursday only. But never fear – the weekly sales listings will continue to be updated, as usual.

This antique iron bench from The Brass Peacock (notice the griffin heads on either arm rest!) got me thinking, ‘what happened to good, solid, American-made iron benches?’ Not that dislike wood, but one doesn’t often see intricate carvings and motifs carved into wood the way one sees beautiful iron work.

Looking around online, I came across many beautiful benches. Here are my tops:

How many times have we seen photos of idyllic small towns in France or Italy that include a vintage bicycle with a basket full of flowers and thought ‘how dreamy’?
In a follow-up to yesterday’s vintage bicycle post, I thought I’d share this photo that I took last week at Haupt Antiek in Apple Valley:
I offer this formula for a wonderful display in your own yard:
1. Purchase (or dig out from your garage) a vintage bicycle. It can be freshly painted, or have that lovely distressed look.
2. Lean it up against your house or a fence – preferably a place with cascading vines.
3. Add flowers to the basket. For more impact, hang additional flowering plants on bicycle wheels, frame and seat.
And voilà! Instant European countryside scene, right at home!

In honor of yesterday’s completion of the 99th Tour de France, I give you vintage (this is The Occasional Saler, after all!) bicycles:

Vive la vintage!

You guessed it – this week’s find is from How Quaint in Shakopee. Besides the great finds throughout the house and yard, the gals at How Quaint have put together the cutest little ‘Asian Room’ out back in the shed. There were a couple of cool, quirky lamps as well as a dresser and a buffet. But my favorite piece was this lovely vintage Chinoiserie-style bar:
Notice that the top of the bar is flipped back halfway – so that you can reach in and grab some booze or juice or ice. The bottom cabinet has special spots for holding bottles, too. But this fantastic piece could be used in a million different ways. (A desk! A buffet! A console!) It’s just so cool…and only $189!
And How Quaint is having its 6th annual Customer Appreciate Cookout this Saturday from 12-4pm. With free food & refreshments, it’s a perfect time to stop by!
