An amazing resource for occasional sale shoppers, it provides an up-to-date listing of all sales and offers an online community where fans of occasional sales can connect and be inspired.

Katherine Ainsworth, Founder – After spending 10 years in New York and two+ years in Paris, founder Katherine Ainsworth returned to her hometown of Minneapolis—and fell in love with the metro area’s unique occasional sales. A design aficionado with an eye for Parisian-inspired pieces, she was inspired to create an amazing resource for occasional sale shoppers, and the The Occasional Saler was born.  Katherine now lives in Hamburg, Germany, with her husband and newborn daughter.  She continues to troll for antiques and vintage pieces in the markets of Europe.  In addition to periodically contributing to The Occasional Saler, Katherine has her own travel and lifestyle blog, www.katherineainsworth.com.

Sue Ainsworth, Editor – Sue loves the thrill of the hunt.  Having spent years traveling to Europe in search of special pieces, Sue continues to follow her passion for high-quality, well-crafted pieces with a history, whether old or re-purposed.  She is continually inspired by the many clever uses for items and the artful displays she finds in her favorite shops.  Writing and photographing for The Occasional Saler has given Sue, a natural extrovert, the perfect opportunity to combine her love of unique pieces with her knack for connecting with occasional sale shop owners, whom she finds energetic, creative, and engaging.  She is a longtime booster of small, local businesses and loves to discover a new shop.

  1. Hi,
I am opening a shop in Elk River called Ella’s in August. How can I get placed in your directory? Our sales will be the second and third weeks of the month.

      Hi Patsy,

      That’s very exciting!

In order to be listed, shops must sell at least 75% vintage/upcycled/refurbished goods and must be open 5 days per month or fewer. I visit every shop before it’s listed to make sure that it meets these requirements. I’m strict because if I listed every shop that had a few vintage pieces/antiques and was open more often, I would be listing almost every store in the Twin Cities – and that’s not helpful to the shoppers!

If Ella’s meets these two requirements, I’m happy to come up and check out the shop!

Good luck and congratulations on opening your shop!!

        Hi Katherine,
What a great website you have!
I am just opening Know the Joy, an Occasional Sale store in Maplewood that sells vintage and unusual home decor. I’d love to be added to your list.

Hi, I’d like to be part of your listing too. thanks Mary

    • Katherine says:

      Hi Mary,

I received your post to The Occasional Saler blog, and I’d love to know more about your sales! How often are you open? And what type of items do you sell? Do you sell primarily vintage, “up cycled”, refurbished pieces?

You can email me at katherine@theoccasionalsaler.com

      Thanks for getting in touch!

I am the Communications and Events Intern at Bridging, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Bloomington. We are hosting an Occasional Sale from the 14th through the 16th featuring antiques, distinctive home decor, and other unique items and all of the proceeds assist Bridging in providing high demand items to clients. I was wondering if there was a way to post the listing on the site? I read that you always visit before you list, but I thought I would check anyways!

    Thank you!

    • Katherine says:

      Hi Sarah,

      Thanks for your message!

I do have strict guidelines for this site..can you tell me more about the sale? Do you have photos of the items you’ll be selling?

  4. Would love to have you come check us out and get listed!

I live in the Anoka area and am curious as to why there are no sales listed up here. I know there are some. Any info you can provide would be much appreciated. Thank you!

    • Katherine says:

      Hi Carrie,

Thank you for your input. Some shops may not be listed on The Occasional Saler because they do not fit the requirements that we have (listed on the “Why Occasional Sales?” page) – having at least 75% vintage/antique goods, not be open more than 5 days per month (with an exception made for the pre-holiday period in December), and be visited by me or a colleague.

There may also be some new shops that I haven’t yet gotten to, but will soon!

    • Katherine says:

      Hey Gabby,

I think your emails aren’t coming through b/c your photos are too big… ah, technology : (

Anyway, hope you’re having a great holiday season!

  7. Please could you post the letter above?

      Hello, Laurel,

It sounds like a great idea and we certainly wish you well in this new venture. However, the purpose of the Occasional Saler – at this time, at least – is to alert shoppers to sales rather than to create a networking tool for vendors. Please let us know when your calendar of sales is available so we can check it out.

      Best wishes,
