Cool Find: Three-Person Chair

At first glance, this circular 3-person “chair” looks wholly impractical.  But having run out of other seating options at the bar (and wearing very high heels), two friends and I took a seat.

Surprise!  This design is genius!  Because the angle of the seats allows all three people to look inward and easily converse, it is actually the most practical option.

I had never seen this design before. Or at least never noticed it, although it’s rather difficult to miss.  I found it in a bar in the Marais neighborhood of Paris, and assumed from its style and construction that it’s a vintage or antique piece.  It seems like perfect parlor seating.  Like something the French intellectuals would have used to host their salons in the 19th century.

The bad news: I fell in love with this chair, and have since scoured flea markets, consignment shops and boutiques around France and Belgium and have failed to find another one.  But never fear, the search continues!  (P.S. please let me know if you spot one!!)

INSPIRATION: Swedish Country

I’ve always been drawn to Swedish interiors – both classic/country and modern.  But as I’m planning to a trip to Scandinavia this summer, I’m really delving into Swedish style.

As frequent Occasional Salers yourselves (right!?), I’m sure you’ve come across some lovely pieces that could be worked into a room with just about any style.  Well, any classic style.  And the thing with Swedish interiors, both classic and modern, is that they’re basic enough that they’re quite flexible in terms of incorporating varying accent colors, furniture and décor.

Take a look:

(1) Clean, classic Swedish design. i know I've seen similar looking furniture at occasional sales!
(2) 'Dressed-up', whimsical Swedish décor.
(3) Blissful white.
(4) A pleasant dining area.
(5) Calm + cool stairway.
(6) an invitingly-decluttered living room.
(7) White + beige + drama.
(8) wide, comfy chairs + stylish console + floral accents + simple art = relaxing.
(9) an understated but colorful room.
(10) Get the look: antique (ca.1760) Danish side chairs.

Cool Idea: Sink Planter

Strolling through Northeast Minneapolis last weekend for Art-a-Whirl, I noticed this nifty use for an old sink in someone’s front yard:

As it just so happens, I saw this sink at Mustard Moon/S.A.R.A.’s May sale….

….perhaps there’s an industrious soul among us who might turn it into a planter, or some other wonderful thing?!

Before & After: Take a Bookshelf from Cluttered to Charming

This “project” is both a Before & After and a One Little Thing.  It’s truly SO easy, but makes quite a difference.  I used to sit at my desk and stare at a bookshelf, there’s a folding screen in front of all but one shelf.  But that one shelf was a DISASTER (see “Before” photo, below.)  Looking at that ugly shelf made the room seem cluttered, reminded me how many other things in the room needed to be organized, and in general, stressed me out.  So I spent an hour or two re-doing it.  And voilà:

It was simple:

Since I had to keep all of the books in this bookcase (no matter how ugly their spines), I tore a page (excuse the pun) from HGTV stylists and covered some of the least attractive books in paper I had lying around, which happened to be gold.  (I have white paper, too, but decided that was too boring!  Especially on a ‘blah-looking’ white shelf.)

I organized the rest of the books by color groups and then by size.  I tried each stack vertically and horizontally and settled on what worked best.  There were enough books that in order for the shelf to not looked cluttered, I decided to split the books between the shelf and the unused top of the bookcase.

Finally, I looked around the room to see what other items would accent the books.  (The gold vase is from The Cottage House; the teapot and creamer are 1940s Czechoslovakian from a Paris flea market.)

It’s a very small thing, but I much prefer gazing up at the “After” shelf than the “Before” version!

Happy Memorial Day weekend!

Cabin Chic

As many of us in Minnesota get ready to head up to the cabin (maybe for the first time this year!) over the Memorial Day Weekend, I started thinking about cabin décor. Luckily, there are fabulous pieces to be found at occasional sales.  But how about some inspiration in putting it together?

[Photo above] A rustic hideaway (with fancy curtains!) from Architectural Digest. Brown and green work beautifully for this lakeside retreat – and could for you, too!

[Photo above] I love this one from TheHandmadeHome because it feels cabin-y with the knotty pine walls and ceiling, rafters beams (is that even a correct term?), wood floor and antlers. At the same time, the two framed-in yellow knotty pine sections of the wall add pop, but stay true to a wood cabin. The mod white chair and bubble lamp give the room an element of surprise in form (but not color or function, which is why they work).

[Photo above] This traditional Swedish interior gives the cabin a more home-y vs. cabin-y feel with the white painted walls and ceiling, as well as the soft blues, yellows and greens. However, the simplicity of the décor helps the space feel peaceful, and the rock fireplace brings nature inside. From Cottage Home Decorating.

[Photo above] This cabin in Norway puts a completely different spin on what most people think of when they imagine a rural retreat.  Totally retro.  But why not?  (See more of the cabin, as well as other Scandinavian country abodes here.)

[Photo above] Contemporary, but retains classic woodsy elements such as the light wood floors, striped wood walls and rock wall fireplace.  Just add a bit of leather, some pops of white and a slatted wood bench with black industrial legs, and you have contemporary cabin!  From Cookie Magazine seen on Head Over Heels.

[Photo above] And now for something completely different (sorry, Monty Python reference)…from Southern Living, this bedroom offers a light, bright, lush take on country.

[Photo above] Another great find on TheHandmadeHome, this lovely bedroom comes from Trendey.  Love the silhouette on the wall! That combined with the fun paper hangings and bright, feminine bed coverings soften a rather rugged looking wall.

Eye On: Fancy Trash

I’m going to admit it: I’ve been thinking a lot of garbage lately.  No, not gossip!  Real garbage – as in, stuff to going to the landfill.  Well, more specifically, where the trash goes  before it leaves my home.

I’m redecorating a home office space for myself and I’ve sourced a lot of the décor at occasional sales.  I’m drawn to rather formal pieces – there’s a lot of gold and elegant florals.  So the industrial aluminum wastebasket I’ve been using doesn’t work in the space.

As luck would have it, I found a fantastic gold & silver Florentine wastebasket (yes, actually made in Italy!) at The Bee Cottage earlier this month.  Then I found another perfect wastebasket at the Urban Cottage two weeks ago.  It’s perfect for my boyfriend, an antique map collector who lived in Paris – see below and you’ll understand why!

All of this trash on the mind got me thinking: why is there never a garbage in photos of rooms featured in glossy home magazines or interior design books?  Stylish people throw things away, too, right?  And even if they’re not shown in photos, there must be trash cans in these spaces.  I turned to a favorite of mine, elledecor.com for answers.  Here’s what I found:

Floret by John Robshaw Textiles. Photo by Geoffrey Sokol for Elledecor.com
Heather Ikat at Squarefeathers.com
Farfalle by Fornasetti at Barneys New York. Photo by Geoffrey Sokol for elledecor.com
Mirror wastebasket by Notre Monde from Ankasa.com. Photo by Geoffrey Sokol for Elledecor.com
Brillante Croco at Squarefeathers.com
Peacock by Il Papiro (Phone 212-288-9330). Photo by Geoffrey Sokol for Elledecor.com

You’ve got to have them, so wastebaskets might as well be attractive!
