The Cottage House
The Cottage House

Outside the snow was blowing. In the shops, it was warm and cozy. Everywhere I looked today, I saw white. There was a lot of white furniture of the shabby chic variety from chairs, dining tables, armoires, buffets, and china cabinets at The French Flea in Anoka and at The Cottage House in South Minneapolis. Of course, there were colorful items as well including dishes, mirrors, pillows, and other decor.
At Amour Sophie I found subtly colored furniture with French flair, scarves, jewelry, original art, and candles to warm your spirit. I learned that Amour Sophie will be moving to larger quarters next month and sharing space with Bleu Velvet Vintage at 3002 E. 50th St. with an opening date for the combined business of Feb. 11, 6-8 pm and Thu-Sat 10-6. They will be open every Wed-Sat so, alas, this is our last report. And this weekend is your last chance to visit Amour Sophie at 46th & Bloomington.
Bon chance. And happy saling!

Second Hand Rose will be open on January 1st to start their anniversary weekend celebrating 20 years in business. They were the first store to open strictly as an occasional sale in Minnesota and have remained true to this concept. Owners, vendors, and location have changed, but the store still sets the standard. Second Hand Rose is a favorite venue for Twin Cities shoppers and also has a national online audience. Congratulations to all who have been part of Second Hand Rose! And thank you!
Happy New Year and happy saling!

A jolly Santa is the first thing you see as you enter Antique Alley. Then a welcoming voice offers a cup of coffee. It’s clearly the kind of place which makes shopping a pleasure. For gifts or your own outdoor activities, the homemade woolen mittens come in a wide range of colors and patterns. There are antique ornaments and decorations for the holidays, but the real draw is the wall of plaid, flannel shirts – a popular item this month and next.

Entertaining is the focus at The French Flea with creatively set tables and beautifully decorated wreaths. Dining tables, occasional tables, buffets and chests are painted in warm whites and blacks, some with French embellishments. Glassware sparkles and silver shines. Shortbread cookies and cocoa are yummy treats – and the mixes can be purchased for you or for gifts or both. Happy saling!

Our previews start early with many shops opening their doors this first weekend of December. Our friends in Shakopee will be ready to greet you on Thursday with their takes on holiday decor and gifts. Refinished furniture is a favorite at Amour Cru with a mix of shabby chic, rustic, and modern styles. The vendors at How Quaint also offer a selection of styles but rely more on time tested vintage and traditional antiques. (I did see an office chair and metal table painted apple green there last month too). That’s the fun of saling – you never know when you’ll see that special something!

More Shopping on Sunday

Urban Cottage
Urban Cottage

In case you didn’t make it to all the small, local businesses you like on Saturday, there’s still time. It was delightful to see so much community support for Small Business in Carver, Chaska and Shakopee. Hopefully, this is a year ’round thing.

Urban Cottage is one of the occasional sales open on Sunday. Why not stop by? 5157 Bloomington Avenue South, Minneapolis. Open 10-5. Happy saling!
