{"id":482,"date":"2012-06-25T07:00:04","date_gmt":"2012-06-25T12:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theoccasionalsaler.com\/?p=482"},"modified":"2012-06-18T20:16:28","modified_gmt":"2012-06-19T01:16:28","slug":"elements-of-style-made-in-occupied-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theoccasionalsaler.com\/?p=482","title":{"rendered":"Elements of Style: &#8220;Made in Occupied Japan&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since I&#8217;ve started <em>occasional saling<\/em>, <strong>I&#8217;ve noticed a few pieces with a curious mark on them: &#8220;Occupied Japan&#8221; or &#8220;Made in Occupied Japan.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I thought &#8220;occupied Japan?&#8221; \u00a0Occupied by whom? \u00a0When? \u00a0Why? \u00a0Given that the words are in English, I assumed that these pieces were being imported to an English speaking country. \u00a0And from the age of the items, I guessed that this mark was used at some point in the 1900s.<\/p>\n<p>So I did some research, and discovered that there isn&#8217;t one story on why these marking exist. \u00a0It is commonly believed, however, that <strong>from 1945-1952, following World War II, the US required that all items imported from Japan to the US carry one of four marks<\/strong>: &#8220;Japan&#8221;, &#8220;Made in Japan&#8221;, &#8220;Occupied Japan&#8221; or &#8220;Made in Occupied Japan&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>There are, in fact, collectors who specialize in Occupied Japan pieces. \u00a0Serious collectors prefer the &#8220;Occupied Japan&#8221; and &#8220;Made in Occupied Japan&#8221;
