There are many interior d\u00e9cor “basics” that I should know, but don’t. \u00a0One example is the console table. \u00a0I bought a wonderful Florentine-looking console at the Urban Cottage recently, and I started wondering about it.<\/p>\n

Where does the name “console” table come from? \u00a0What is the purpose of the console table? \u00a0(To put random knick-knacks on? \u00a0That would be my guess, but I doubt that was the original inspiration!)<\/p>\n

According to Judith Miller’s Furniture, World Styles from Classical to Contemporary<\/em><\/a> – a wonderful resource – the console table was first used in the 17th century Europe. \u00a0They were found in formal rooms and grand residences; console tables were made to display wealth, which would explain why they were (and still are) finished in ornate detail.<\/p>\n
